FORM STILL FOLLOWS FUNCTION

A (CAUTIONARY) TALE AS OLD AS TIME

You’re building a new home. Congratulations! It’s a major undertaking that can be both exciting and daunting at the same time. It’s important to remember, though, that it’s much easier—not to mention cheaper— to erase a wall on a blueprint than to call in a team to knock it down post construction. While it’s easy to get caught up in mood boards for that beautiful foyer design, this is the home construction version of the saying measure twice, cut once.

We put together a list of questions to ask yourself before you’re wishing a wall wasn’t there.

Do I have/am planning to have kids?

If you answered yes to this question, it may affect how you arrange your floor plan. Perhaps you’d like to have your child’s room closer to yours if she’s young; or not if he comes home late after parties with friends. If you’re an empty-nester, you’re free to highlight the more delicate spaces such as your dining room for a seamless way to entertain guests.

What about friends of the four-legged variety?

The most important thing here is deciding where in your home you do and don’t want your pets. If that big lovable golden retriever sleeps upstairs with you, keeping him out of your living room on the way to take him outside in the morning will get old. Especially before your coffee. Think about making your mud room big enough to fit a large crate, or throw caution to the wind because you have a cat and she’ll jump anywhere she wants regardless of your floor plan.

Can I see myself retiring here?

If you’re young and purchasing your first home, it’s perfectly normal to live in a few houses over the course of your life. But if you really love the area, or are looking for somewhere to slow down and kick back a bit, give this some serious thought. Stairs, in particular, get progressively more annoying as you age, and a two or more floor house may not appeal to you.

The moral of the story is this; plan for your most effortless life. The differences between an off-the-rack suit and a perfectly tailored one might be subtle, but the overall effect can be jaw-dropping. Likewise, what may seem like bland mental exercises now can make coming home a true pleasure. At Saint Aubyn, we do our absolute best to make you happy—all you have to do is decide what that looks like.
